How Crane-Assisted Tree Work Is Safely Performed

Safety practices and planning for crane-assisted tree operations

These procedures are followed for every crane-assisted project and are not optional when work is performed close to homes, structures, utilities, or other high-value targets. Crane-assisted methods allow for controlled lifting and removal of large tree sections while reducing impact forces, ground disturbance, and risk to surrounding property.

Because crane operations involve suspended loads, heavy equipment, and precise coordination, they require additional planning, safety controls, and insurance coordination beyond standard tree work.  All crane-assisted tree work is planned and executed within a documented professional standards and tree risk framework, ensuring alignment with ANSI Z133 safety requirements and risk-controlled decision-making.

This page explains what property owners can expect when crane-assisted tree work is required.

Why Crane-Assisted Tree Work Is Different

Unlike conventional tree removals, crane-assisted operations involve:

  • Lifting and moving suspended tree sections

  • Coordination between a supervising arborist, crane operator, and ground crew

  • Defined swing radii, rigging zones, and exclusion areas

  • Limited margins for error, especially when working near structures

For these reasons, crane-assisted tree work follows safety protocols similar to those used in construction and utility operations.

Safety Zones & Homeowner Presence

During crane-assisted tree operations, a designated safety exclusion zone is established. This includes:

  • The crane and swing radius

  • Rigging and drop zones

  • Areas beneath suspended loads

  • Equipment operating zones, including chippers and stump grinders

  • Any area where falling debris, rotating equipment, or moving machinery may be present

For safety and insurance reasons, homeowners, occupants, guests, and unauthorized individuals are required to remain outside all active work zones at all times.

Homeowners are not permitted to assist, help, or otherwise direct operations. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Feeding brush or material into chippers

  • Entering or standing within stump grinding safety zones

  • Handling rigging, tools, or equipment

  • Providing instructions to crew members or equipment operators

  • Entering any area that places them at risk of injury

Homeowners may remain inside the residence or observe from an approved location outside the designated safety zones. A brief walkthrough of the work plan may be provided prior to the start of operations.

Once crane operations or equipment use begins, work proceeds without interruption unless a safety issue is identified by the supervising arborist or equipment operator.

Scheduling, Preparation & Coordination

Crane-assisted work requires advance coordination, including:

  • Crane reservation and operator scheduling

  • Crew allocation

  • Site logistics and access planning

  • Insurance coordination and documentation

Because of these requirements, crane-assisted work is scheduled only after all pre-work conditions are met. Weather conditions, access limitations, and safety considerations may affect scheduling windows.

Tree Risk Assessments Prior to Crane-Assisted Work

Before any crane-assisted tree removal is performed, a tree risk assessment is conducted to evaluate tree condition, structural integrity, target exposure, and site constraints. This assessment helps determine whether crane assistance is necessary and informs the work plan, equipment selection, and safety controls. Tree risk assessments represent a snapshot in time and are used to guide safe decision-making based on observed conditions at the time of evaluation.

Deposits for Crane-Assisted Work

Crane-assisted projects require advance commitments for equipment, personnel, and administrative coordination. For this reason, deposits are required to secure a work date for crane-assisted operations.

Project-specific deposit terms, scheduling requirements, and conditions are outlined in the written agreement provided prior to scheduling.

Insurance & Risk Management

Crane-assisted tree work is performed in accordance with industry best practices and insurance requirements. Safety procedures are in place to:

  • Protect occupants, workers, and property

  • Maintain compliance with liability and crane operator requirements

  • Reduce the likelihood of personal injury or property damage

These procedures are followed for every crane-assisted project and are not optional.

Final Note

Crane-assisted tree removal is used when conditions demand a higher level of control and safety. These procedures allow work to be performed efficiently while minimizing risk to people and property.

Formal project terms, including deposits, scheduling, and safety requirements, are provided in writing and must be acknowledged prior to work being scheduled.
