Root Collar Excavation in Fort Hunt & Alexandria, VA

Exposing Buried Root Collars, Correcting Girdling Roots & Improving Tree Health

Many declining trees in Fort Hunt and surrounding southern Alexandria neighborhoods are suffering from a hidden issue below the mulch and soil line: buried root collars and stem-girdling roots.

At Sean Harman’s Tree Care, LLC, we use professional pneumatic soil excavation techniques to safely expose the root flare without damaging critical roots. Root collar excavation (RCE) is one of the most overlooked — yet highly beneficial — tree preservation services available for mature landscape trees.

Concerned your tree may be buried too deeply or showing signs of decline? Call Sean Harman’s Tree Care today to schedule a professional root collar evaluation with an ISA Certified Arborist.

What Is Root Collar Excavation?

Root collar excavation is the process of carefully removing excess soil, mulch, and compacted material from around the base of a tree to expose the natural root flare.

In healthy trees, the trunk should gradually flare outward where it meets the root system. When this area becomes buried over time from excess mulch, grading changes, construction, or repeated landscaping, serious problems can develop.

Common issues associated with buried root collars include:

– Stem girdling roots
– Basal decay development
– Reduced oxygen exchange
– Chronic moisture retention against bark
– Insect and fungal activity
– Premature decline and canopy dieback
– Reduced structural stability
– Poor vigor and stress response

Signs Your Tree May Need Root Collar Excavation

You may notice:

– No visible root flare at the base of the tree
– Mulch piled against the trunk (“mulch volcanoes”)
– Sparse canopy or thinning foliage
– Early fall color or leaf drop
– Progressive branch dieback
– Epicormic sprouting from the trunk
– Wet or decaying bark at the base
– Fungal growth near the trunk flare
– Surface roots wrapping around the trunk

These symptoms are extremely common in mature maples, oaks, cherries, beeches, and ornamental trees throughout Fort Hunt and older Alexandria neighborhoods.

Our Process

Sean Harman’s Tree Care utilizes pneumatic soil excavation techniques designed specifically for arboricultural applications.

Using compressed air excavation equipment, we can:

– Safely remove soil without damaging structural roots
– Locate buried root flare issues
– Identify girdling roots
– Improve oxygen exchange around the root zone
– Prepare trees for additional soil remediation treatments

Depending on the tree and site conditions, root collar excavation may also be combined with:

– Vertical mulching
– Radial trenching
– Soil decompaction
– Organic soil amendments
– Structural pruning recommendations
– Tree risk assessment services

Why Root Collar Excavation Matters

Many trees showing canopy decline are treated only for surface symptoms while the primary issue remains buried underground.

Root collar excavation helps identify hidden problems before irreversible decline occurs.

In many cases, correcting buried root flare conditions can:

– Improve tree vigor
– Reduce stress
– Slow canopy decline
– Improve root function
– Increase drought tolerance
– Extend the service life of mature trees

Fort Hunt Tree Preservation Focus

As the Fort Hunt Tree Guy and founder of the Fort Hunt Tree Observatory, Sean Harman regularly documents long-term tree decline patterns associated with buried root collars, compacted soils, and root dysfunction throughout southern Alexandria.

This service is especially important in older established neighborhoods where repeated landscaping and decades of mulch accumulation have buried the natural root flare well below grade.
